Cocktail of the Week

Novice or professional, anyone who has been even slightly tuned in to what has been going on in the cocktail world in the last ten years will recognize a significant change. What we saw in the the last few decades of the 1900's has been turned on its head since 2000. Now most people have a renewed appreciation for a well-crafted cocktail made of the best ingredients and a study of the classic cocktail.

Nothing to start the evening off like a cocktail treat! If you have a favorite cocktail, email the recipe and your special "take" on it and we'll post it...

Gillia (2/1/10)

Cocktail of the Week

Based on the fact that Austin has hit a bit of a "warmth" moment in our winter and I've been in the mood for single malt, I was in the mood for a Gillia!

2oz. Aperol

1oz. scotch whisky (I dig a smokier blend for this... White Horse)

twist of orange

Pour ingredients into a mixing glass with ice. Stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add the garnish.

Horny Toad (1/25/10)

Cocktail of the Week

A twist on the Margarita, this carries that perfect ZaZa lemon tartness that just gets you going! Depending on the specific Tequila, reposado or silver could work, but silver gives this drink a different view...sharp and fresh.

There are also other Horny Toad recipes, with little in common, including triple sec/coffee liqueur/cream, lemonade/triple sec/vodka, and of course light variations on the Margarita! This is, obviously, not those. Get horned.

1 oz. silver tequila (El Tesoro or Herradura)

2/3 oz. Cointreau (other orange liqueurs don't seem to be the same)

1 1/3 oz. fresh lemon juice

Crust a margarita glass with salt. Shake all ingredients with ice. Half of the time, I like to strain into glass filled with crushed ice. Otherwise, strain into crusted, chilled, cocktail glass

The Last Word (1/18/10)

Cocktail of the Week

This may sound like a catastrophe, but it is a brilliantly balanced act. The Last Word is equal parts gin (for me, Boodles), Chartreuse, maraschino cherry liqueur, and fresh lime juice. I do have a preference for a whisper less Chartreuse, taking a touch of the licorice off. Josh Loving and Bill Norris of Fino Austin turned me on to this drink and it is a staple at my house! I'll say again... on paper, it doesn't look so great, but it really works!

3/4 oz. gin (Boodles)

3/4 oz. green Chartreuse (maybe a whisper less)

3/4 oz. maraschino liqueur (Luxardo)

3/4 oz. fresh lime juice

Shake well with ice. Strain into chilled cocktail glass.
